Learning the Basics of stand up paddleboarding

Intro to sup lesson plan

Learning how to Stand Up Paddle Board can be intimidating for the first timer. It is our goal to make the process and comfortable and at pace with your paddling goals. A good strong foundation is key for anything to build and grow. This intro to SUP class can teach you all you need to get started in the sport of Stand Up Paddleboarding. Below you will find a lesson plan for the Intro to SUP class:


The Intro to SUP Class is broken into 2 segments, Land and Water exercises. The Land exercises will focus on Land based execution of stroke mechanics and a brief summation of terminology. The Water section will take those skills and use exercises and test to confirm the students understanding.


LAND

In this section we will be covering the names of the parts and pieces to your paddling equipment. We will also be covering dry demos of proper mechanics and safety protocols (30 minutes)


Learning the terminology:

  1.  The Board
    1. Nose
    2. Tail
    3. Rails
    4. Fins
    5. Handle
    6. Traction Pad
  2. The Paddle
    1. Blade
    2. Shaft
    3. Adjuster
    4. Handle
    5. On-Side vs Off-Side (Blade)


Land Demos:

  1. Leaving the launching area
    1. Getting on the SUP
    2. Distancing yourself
    3. Standing up
  2. Paddling strokes
    1. Forward stroke
    2. Sweep
    3. Reverse Sweep
    4. Traveling and directing your board
    5. Stoping
  3. Returning to the launching area
    1. Returning to prone
    2. Stabilizing
    3. Offloading from the SUP
  4. Emergency procedures
    1. Running into objects
    2. Running into paddlers
    3. Remounting SUP

Water

In this section we will be simulating various strokes and mechanics in a dynamic water environment through the use of certain exercises. (30 minutes)

    1. Carrying your SUP
    2. Attaching fin
    3. Securing leash
    4. Getting on the SUP
    5. Distancing yourself
    6. Standing up
  2. Paddling strokes
    1. Forward stroke
